Critical reception

Blurryface received mostly positive reviews from music critics. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from music critics, the album has received an average score of 80, based on 5 reviews, signifying «generally favorable reviews». Garrett Kamps of Billboard hailed the album as a «hot mess (in a good way)», but gave it a mixed review, saying that Blurryface «doesn’t quite reach the heights of Vessel».

Sputnikmusic and Alternative Press gave Blurryface favorable reviews, with the latter being the more positive. Their critic, Jason Pettigrew, described the album as «wonderful» and hailed the band’s mix of genres in their songs, highlighting «Ride», «Polarize», «Message Man», «Tear in My Heart», «We Don’t Believe What’s on TV», «Goner» and «Lane Boy» in his review.

The album was ranked at number 1 in Alternative Press’ «10 Essential Records of 2015» list. Jason Pettigrew of Alternative Press wrote that the band combined «hip-hop vistas, tinges of reggae, every man pop and furious electronic urgency and bellicose sadness into an impossibly cohesive record.» The album was included at number 2 on Rock Sound’s top 50 releases of 2015 list. Blurryface was nominated for Album Of The Year at the 2016 Alternative Press Music Awards. The album also won the category of «Top Rock Album» at the Billboard Music Awards.

Commercial performance

Blurryface debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, earning 147,000 album-equivalent units (134,000 pure album sales) in the United States in its first week, making it Twenty One Pilots’ highest charting album and marking the band’s highest opening week in the U.S. The group also made their first appearance on the UK top 40 with Blurryface debuting at number 14. By November 2015, the album sold 500,000 copies worldwide. The following month, it was announced the album’s U.S. sales was over 505,000 copies. By January 2016, the album had sold 592,000 copies in the U.S. Two months later, the album’s U.S. sales had risen to 753,000 copies. By the end of March, the album’s U.S. sales stood at 792,000. By mid-June, the album had sold 924,000 copies, and over 1 million by late July. The album has since been certified gold in Canada and platinum in the U.S.

Since March 3, 2017, Blurryface has been 3x-Platinum Certified by the RIAA, marking over 3,000,000 copies sold.

On March 1, 2018, RIAA announced that Blurryface was the first album of the digital era to have every song RIAA certified, with Hometown’s recent Gold certification, marking 500,000 copies.

В апреле 2012 г. в истории группы случился новый поворот. Twenty One Pilots подписали контракт с Atlanta Record– дочерним лейблом американской звукозаписывающей компании Fueled by Ramen (произносится как «фьюэлд бай рэмен»). Об этом дуэт объявил на своем выступлении в родном городе.

Вскоре, в июле 2012 г., группа записала на студии Fueled by Ramen и выпустила мини-альбом с простым названием, говорящим само за себя, – Three Songs («Три песни»). Условия сотрудничества были обсуждены во время переговоров Тайлера с представителями компании. Права на большинство треков второго альбома перешли к Fueled by Ramen. Этап участия в фестивалях

В течение всего 2014 г. дуэт радовал своих фанатов и не только их выступлениями в самых разных уголках США на фестивалях: Fire fly, Boston Calling, Bonnaroo и Lollapalooza. С сентября по ноябрь 2014 г. Twenty One Pilots ездили по стране с туром Quietis Violent («квайат из вайэлант», что можно перевести как «тишина агрессивна» или «тишина – это насилие»).  

31 декабря 2014 г. дуэт порадовал фанатов новым клипом на песню «Ода сну» – “Ode to Sleep”. Видео представляло собой записи с трех концертов.

Клип наглядно показывал быстрый рост исполнительского мастерства дуэта. Из провинциального музыкального коллектива Twenty One Pilots превратились в альтернативную группу национального масштаба.

Early Life

Joseph is the eldest son of Kelly and Chris Joseph, a math teacher and coach at high school respectively, before his mother became a basketball coach and his father a principal. Joseph was born in Columbus, Ohio, and has two brothers; Zack and Jay, as well as a sister, Madison. From an early age, Joseph played basketball and went on to play point guard for Worthington Christian. In 2008, the team placed second in the state tournament.

Joseph realized his desire to pursue music after seeing a songwriter perform at a High Street club and rejected a basketball scholarship from Otterbein University. He began to play music using an old keyboard he had received as a gift and mimicked radio melodies.

В 2019 году дуэт пополнил свой репертуар хитом Chlorine. У музыкантов появилась традиция — радовать российских поклонников сольными выступлениями. В 2019-м группа дала концерт в Москве, а летом 2020 года готовилась вновь появиться перед столичной публикой.

В апреле 2020-го стартовал показ клипа на трек Level of Concern. В течение двух недель после размещения на ютьюб-канале видео набрало более 17 млн просмотров.

В конце месяца команда приняла участие в виртуальном музыкальном фестивале, анонсированном лейблом Warner Music. Помимо Twenty One Pilots, участниками мероприятия стали Эд Ширан, Бруно Марс, Coldplay, Карди Би и другие.

Official Music Video

On July 8, 2021, the official music video for «Saturday» was released on the duo’s YouTube channel. directed by Andrew Donoho. which was filmed for 3 days in late May 2021. It was filmed in San Diego and Los Angeles, California, and features Tyler and Josh performing the song atop a submarine drove by a group of hooded figures. People begin entering, before the camera pans to the interior, in which a party is occurring and the duo are performing. Moments later, a gigantic sea monster deliberately crashes into the submarine, causing it to break and begin to flood as the duo continue their performance submerged in water and the guests panic. Eventually, the band manages to escape from the sinking vehicle, and emerges on the surface. The video ends with the sea monster slowly swimming by, underneath the duo and remaining guests.

Тур Bandito Tour

16 октября 2018 г. стартовал Bandito Tour – так музыканты назвали свое очередное гастрольное турне. Маршрут проходит по городам США, Франции, Бельгии, Нидерландов, Великобритании, Германии, Мексики, Канады и других стран. Тур закончится в ноябре 2019 г. Дуэт исполняет для публики 14 песен из пятого альбома. 

Тема музыкальных сочинений, как и в предыдущих альбомах, – душевное здоровье, мысли о самоубийстве, сомнения, размышления о жизни. Во время концертов артисты постоянно удивляют зрителей трюками:

• обратным сальто;
• прыжками на высоту больше 1 м;
• падением в толпу, которая начинает нести музыкантов на руках по залу;
• хождением по висячему мосту;
• лазанием по строительным лесам, установленным на сцене.

В 2019 г. власти Колумбуса временно переименовали один из центральных бульваров родного города музыкантов в Twenty One Pilots Boulevard. Это событие приурочено к выступлениям Джоша Дана и Тайлера Джозефа на сцене местного концертного зала – National wide Arena.

Branding and logo

Vessel Era logo (2011-2015)

The logo for the band consists of a pipe, dash and slash «|-/». This logo has been used for the band since Regional at Best. And was original red, blue and white with each part of the design overlapping. With the release of Blurryface, the band re-branded slightly and featured the logo as it can be typed. Brandon Rike redesigned it with this purpose and makes a lengthy post on his website detailing the work into the current branding and the concepts behind the album Blurryface.

Reception

Trench was critically acclaimed upon release, notably for its production, lyrical content, musical diversity and cohesiveness. Many critics recognized the album as the band’s best work. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the album has an average score of 81 out of 100 based on 6 reviews, indicating «universal acclaim».Kerrang! gave the album a positive review saying «some of the year’s catchiest, most accessible alt-pop tunes of the year speaks volumes of the level upon which they’re operating here.»

Billboard gave the album a positive review calling the album «surprisingly cohesive» and that «Trench revels in the confounding genre-blurring and cavernous conceptualism that has defined Twenty One Pilots over their nearly decade-long existence.» Chris Willman, writing for Variety, gave the album three and a half stars, saying «Take my recommendation and forget about the most deeply conceptual parts of this concept album…and enjoy the many parts of Trench that don’t require a thirst for symbolic origin stories.» Damon Taylor of Dead Press complimented the album saying, «a plethora of influences are splashed across the record, giving their core sound a new distinction.»

Christopher Weingarten of Rolling Stone gave the album a positive review calling it «more mature» than Blurryface, saying the album’s elements have «coalesced into a smarter, more mature whole», and that the album «has more of a cohesive sound and feel». Joshua Copperman of PopMatters, in a positive review, wrote «The album hangs together thanks to an increased maturity in the thematic content and production.» In a positive review of the album, GIG Soup wrote, «Twenty One Pilots are discussing topics others are afraid to, and they are doing it right»

In a positive review, AllMusic’s Neil Z. Yeung wrote «although Trench requires a few spins to really register, it’s ultimately rewarding and fully immersive, delivering a depth and gravity at which Twenty One Pilots only hinted on Blurryface.» David Hayter of 411 Mania wrote, «mythos laden concept album Trench might struggle to consistently fire on all cylinders, but the good far out weighs the bad, making for a thoughtful and sonically daring experience.»Gary Ryan of NME wrote, «Trench is the sound of a band ratcheting up the ambition without ever being pulled down by an undertow of pretentiousness. It’s more low-key than Blurryface, but ultimately more rewarding.»Stephen Keegan of Hot Press also gave the album a positive review, saying «In today’s ‘stan culture’, Joseph’s clever breadcrumbing of lyrical clues allows fans to bond over their shared community – and will have obsessives debating on Genius.com for months.»

Twenty One Pilots просто чертовски хорошо звучат

Их творчество — идеальный пример качественной, сложной, даже умной поп-музыки. Можно вникать, копать лор и расшифровывать строчки. Можно просто слушать и кайфовать. И говоря «поп», я максимально обобщаю. Потому что в их звуке гармонично сочетается и инди-рок, и синты, и разные виды электроники, и тяжелые гитары, и максимально современный хип-хоп, и соул — что угодно

Но тут важно отметить, что все альбомы группы плотно связаны грустной, депрессивной атмосферой. Даже в летнем хите Stressed Out это слышно отчетливо

На альбоме Trench депрессия группы достигла максимума — он даже начинается с грохочущей гитарами песни Jumpsuit, в финале которой Джозеф срывается на металкорный скрим. По этой же причине некоторым старым фанатам диск показался слишком тяжелым. Новый альбом не такой — да и на старые пластинки Twenty One Pilots он не похож. 

Перед выходом альбома группа снова поигралась с фанатами через сайт dmaorg.info, да и вообще по-всякому тизерила стилистику пластинки и новую цветовую гамму релиза. Даже название альбома — Scaled And Icy — это анаграмма фразы «Клэнси мертв». А Клэнси — это главный герой диска Trech и очередное альтер-эго Тайлера. Эта фраза хорошо резонирует с новым звуком группы. Альбом Scaled And Icy — это сборник очень цепкой радио-фрэндли музыки, но разброс жанров на нем не уступает старым работам группы. Однако песни на альбоме преимущественно позитивные и светлые, что для дуэта необычно.

Впрочем, заканчивается диск мрачным хип-хопом No Chances с угрожающем хором на припеве, поющим: «Мы идем за тобой, шансов нет». Некоторые фанаты уверены, что это подтверждение слухов о том, что в этом году группа выпустит еще один альбом — или вторую часть этого. И вот уж он-то будет мрачным и депрессивным как раньше. И действительно, нелегко поверить, что Twenty One Pilots так легко расстанутся с историей Демы. Да и история Блюрифейса все еще полна белых пятен.

Holding on to You was originally recorded for Regional at Best, but following the band’s signing with Fueled by Ramen and subsequent discontinuation of the album, the song was included on the bonus edition of the album Vessel.

On May 17, 2011, a teaser snippet featuring Tyler Joseph performing the song with no musical accompaniment was uploaded to the band’s YouTube channel. At this point, the track was titled «Forrest».

Группа добилась успеха своими силами

Прямо сейчас только на Spotify у дуэта почти 23 миллиона прослушиваний в месяц, а их главный хит Stressed Out послушали там же более полутора миллиарда раз. Несколько лет назад песни Twenty One Pilots крутили по радио до тошноты, а у самой банды была репутация подростковых героев. Причем для рядового слушателя появление группы на радаре стало внезапным — они просто в одночасье начали звучать везде. И это наводит на мысли о тщательно спланированом продюсерском проекте, но это не так.

На самом деле мы говорим о стихийно возникшей группе, основанной школьниками из американского города Колумбус. А как я уже говорил сотни раз — лучшие группы школьниками и создаются. Вокалист Twenty One Pilots Тайлер Джозеф просто любил напевать себе под нос и играть на найденном в шкафу своего дома синтезаторе, а банду он сколотил с друзьями еще в 2009 году. Ранние Twenty One Pilots регулярно играли на крошечных гигах с электронщиками и метал-группами, впитывая эту атмосферу в свою музыку. Одноименный дебютник 2009 года — это смесь рэпа, радиохитов, которыми Джозеф любил подыгрывать на синтезаторе, атмосферы The Killers и эмо-рока в духе My Chemical Romance
